How Do You Find Your Identity In Christ
Opening Scripture:
2 Corinthians 5:17 – “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
Finding your identity in Christ is the most important thing you will ever do on this Earth. Anyone who comes to Christ becomes a new creation. Christ came to give us a new identity. The Bible says “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree'” – Galatians 3:13 (ESV) That means he became the curse for us to receive the blessing. Wonderful! isn’t it?
So why are we talking about this topic? “How Do You Find Your Identity In Christ”! Before Christ came Man was living in sin. Although the law was there he still lived in sin. So another scripture says Romans 5:8: “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
What is sin? In Greek, the word for sin is “ἁμαρτία” (hamartia), which means “missing the mark” or “falling short” of a standard. In Hebrew, the word for sin is “חֵטְא” (chét), which also carries the idea of missing the mark or deviating from what is right. It can also mean “rebellion” or “transgression.” Of course, the Law was right but Man could not follow it fully or keep the rules to the letter.
What Is Identity
Before we go further I want us to define the word “Identity” the concept of identity can be expressed through different Greek words such as ταυτότητα (tautotita) and ταυτότης (tautotes), which convey the idea of sameness, selfhood, or oneness. Tautotita comes from the word “tautos,” which means “the same.”
It denotes the state or quality of being identical or indistinguishable from something or someone else. Tautotes, on the other hand, refers to the state or quality of being self-same or identical to oneself, indicating a sense of personal identity or individuality.
Now when we repent and come to Christ. We become new creations as the Bible puts it. Here is what Paul says in this verse observe carefully Galatians 2:20, which says: “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith
in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
I defined Sin earlier to mean when we’re in Christ the old is forgotten in other words we become the righteousness of God. That’s the new Identity any Believer is in. But wait a minute there are some Christians who still depend on the Law.
Christ never came to take away the Law but to fulfill it. But can you use the Law as your Identity? No, you can’t. Christ summarized all the 10 commandments into one “Love”. When you’re full of Love by default you fulfill all the Laws without any difficulty. Remember this Love comes from Christ who is our identity.
In Romans 7:6, says: “But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code.” This verse emphasizes how our identity as believers is no longer defined by the law, but rather by our union with Christ and our relationship with the Holy Spirit.
Conclusion
Christ died for us to be liberated from bondage. As a Believer, this is your time to embrace freedom i.e living by Grace and being guided by the Holy Spirit. This is the new identity we have been given. There are Believers who are still in the Law. Remember as I say the Law works from without telling you to do this or do that but it doesn’t give you the power to execute that which it tells you. But on the other Grace works from within giving you the power to do things effortlessly.
